The role of UNESCO and the Council of Europe in promoting education for gender equality

Gender equality is a priority objective of UNESCO and of the Council of Europe as a fundamental principle of human rights and democracy. The two organizations are actively involved, legally and politically, in the fight against gender inequalities and discrimination, and this issue is addressed in numerous programs, strategies and action plans, in a cross-cutting and integrated perspective. In the view of UNESCO and the Council of Europe, gender equality education is conceived as an essential means of supporting and promoting the values of gender equality, achieving inclusive and quality education for all involved in actions to achieve education for human rights, education for sustainable development and citizenship.

Counselling for socio-professional integration, a stage of the strategy for combating school dropout

The consequences of the dropout phenomenon are complex and generate concerns about how to find ways to intervene from the part of all categories of specialists. Here we present the results of an investigation that highlighted the need for student counseling. Students participating in the survey come from school communities characterized by factors that can favor the phenomenon of school dropout. The problem under consideration was the opportunity to introduce and run some counseling projects / activities that would favor school integration and later the socio-professional integration of the disadvantaged groups. The results obtained support the fact that the counseling activities are important for the students. They have the role of transmitting information, providing procedural and emotional support to improve the learning difficulties of students. All these specialized approaches contribute to the adaptation / integration of school pupils. In the long run, these counseling actions are milestones of professional counseling and guidance opportunities for all students. In conclusion, these actions can be considered as a preliminary step in vocational guidance because they provide information on future schooling opportunities, access criteria in vocational training schools, and provide support for a decision to further pursue studies.

The right to health of older persons in long-term care

The right to health is closely linked and dependent on the exertion of other human rights, both civil and political, as well as economic, social and cultural. With reference to the typology of the obligations that states have in realizing the right to health (to respect, protect and fulfill this right), particular features of specific groups such as the elderly should be considered. It is important that an integrated care model combines elements of preventive, curative and rehabilitative health care at national level. In this respect, older persons should also have access, where appropriate, to professional age-specific services. At the same time, the process of providing health care to older persons in care centres should not violate their other rights. Medication and medical care must be seen not only as elements to prolong life but also to improve its quality.
